A Little Bit About Me...

My tutoring experience has solidified my love for teaching. In my training, I was taught to be more of a guide than a lecturer, leading students through difficult subjects by suggestion and example rather than by rote statement of facts. I often approach teaching as puzzle solving. I will ask myself how I can best explain a topic to a student while also asking the student to look at the subject from different directions to search for a "solution" to the difficulty they may have understanding. One of the most difficult things about math is comprehending the concept. Many learn through repetition, or visual demonstration. I would think that my tutoring skills involve both. Repetition allows one to get an idea of what they are doing and it also helps develop questions. The questions help to get a full understanding of a concept. Sometimes to further complete understanding of a concept visual demonstration is needed. Based on my previous experiences in tutoring elementary school students, most of the time they really don't know the concept and are just going through the motions.
