My career in education has taken place in unique and interesting locations and has provided me with experiences in meeting the dramatically different educational needs of young people. I believe in providing students with challenges and in supporting their efforts to meet those challenges. I started teaching in 1970 as a K-8 substitute, continuing until being hired by a private school in 1975. I then taught full time in East LA. Upon moving to Wa. and being certified here, I taught in several schools in differing cultural settings untill recently starting my own business in Newport. I have also tutored and graded math praxis. I enjoy working with children and get a kick from seeing a discovery or understanding in a students eyes. I've had the opportunity to collect numerous bio. samples for hands on experience. My teaching experience actually extends back to high school where not only did I tutor fellow students in math and chemistry but I also taught swim lessons as my part time job. More recently I tutored students in the chemistry study center at the University of Washington. Furthermore, anyone who attends a University knows that being a successful active learner involves studying in groups where you teach others and others teach you. As a teacher or tutor it is very important to realize that everybody learns differently. Because of this you have to strive to find the way your student learns and utilize creative ways to make sure the student understands what you are teaching to them. Children and adults learn in different ways. Visual, auditory, kinesthetic are three ways that people can learn, I happen to be mostly kinesthetic. I alter how I teach depending on what my students need and what the resources are. I do use a constructivist teaching style to do this. I do believe that a student rises to the expectations of the instructor. I also believe that the responsibility of learning should be increasingly the students as they take over their own education away from the instructor. I believe I have an uncanny ability to break down & analyize any math problem to its simplist components, re-word it into an understandable form, and deliver several different solution options in order for the student to confidently answer - even when it presents itself in different ways. My approach to tutoring in most cases is to help students find answers themselves through questioning and examples rather than by giving direct instruction, which I reserve for students who are struggling with course content rather than understanding. I believe that all students have the capacity to learn and that many undermine themselves by not having faith in their own abilities. The experience of mastering content and understanding can help a student not only with the subject matter at hand, but also with their future studies.
