Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I started tutoring in my teens helping young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders develop English and Math skills as well as speech therapy and public speaking. I tutored my fellow students while attending Carroll Community College in English 101 and 102 as well as Creative Writing. I then moved on to being a one on one with high school students with special needs in the Baltimore area.
I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. I try to let the student use their hands as much as I can to aid in their learning process. For older students such as my high school students or their college counterparts I use more direct audial teaching and visual teaching styles. Every person learns differently, so I cater my t ... read more

At your pace, on your level

I adjust to the student/learner as I am told or discover their learning preferences. However, in my experience and research, I have noticed that active learning and discovery-based learning are arguably most effective mechanisms for knowledge retention. Therefore, I make considerable efforts to implement these styles into my teaching.
I have always been passionate about communications and teaching. I began tutoring mathematics in High School and during my undergraduate schooling I mentored and tutored introductory university level physics, calculus, chemistry, and organic chemistry. I am currently in graduate school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine studying Molecular Biology and Genomics but remain informally interested in mathematics and physics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught every grade level from Pre-Kindergarten to college in my 30 years in the schools of Connecticut, New York, and Maryland. I was an assistant principal for six years, have taught both academic classroom core subjects and dramatic arts, and have written curriculum for a great variety of settings. I love teaching mathematics and writing, because they are logical and marvelous as life-long tools. I believe the same for reading and literature. My formal training as a stage actor and radio announcer/dj allow me to use my voice as a valuable tool in communicating with students. I love teaching almost as much as I love learning!
Stylistically, I am a showman, a questioner, and possessed of a strong desire to reach every one of my students. I try to connect with each student on a friendly and comfortable level so that confidence-building is easy. It is important for me to find ... read more

I have been working with children for the last eleven years. From babysitting and being a nanny, childcare and toddler classes, and now teaching elementary school, I absolutely love working and learning with children of all ages. I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Frostburg in 2006 in elementary education, with a specialization in social studies. During my student teaching I worked with children in preschool, first, third, and fourth grades. Right after graduation, I was hired as a long-term substitute for a second grade teaching position. The position was then extended into a full contract and I have been teaching second grade for the last three years.
I love teaching and learning with children. I enjoy getting to know children, then create and build lessons that are going to meet their needs and interests. I believe every child has the potential for success, once their learn ... read more

My teaching style emphasizes the differences between children, especially with regards to learning styles. Different children comprehend and understand in unique ways - while one may understand best from tactile or visual demonstrations, others learn best simply by hearing. Even within the same student, certain concepts are best understood in atypical ways. I firmly believe that as an educator, my job is to be flexible and creative in devising appropriate teaching methods for each child - what works for one will not always work for another. The most effective teaching comes from understanding this, and tailoring specific approaches to each individual student's needs.
I currently have two degrees: a B.S. in Environmental Science and a B.A. in Global Studies. In pursuing these degrees I have gained knowledge in various fields including biology, math, chemistry, global politics a ... read more

I would say that my teaching style is very interactive. Anyone can give instructions but I love feedback from a one on one situation as well as a group environment. I base alot of my instruction on analogies; when a person can relate an experience or another word to a term being tought, their understanding is broadened and 99% of the time embedded in the longterm memory. That to me is not only developing the ability to draw on a built up knowledge base, but also broadens ones ability to convey what has been learned.
I have always wanted to teach. When I was a child I would round up the kids in my neighborhood and make them do lessons that I created. I do remember they did not like that. I went to college and earned a BS in Biology always knowing that I would eventually teach the sciences. I was an excellent student and have always found pride in myself on my ability to communi ... read more

My experience is principally in marine research. In such, I have taught at three universities. Most recently I have been giving scheduled seminars for several years. I am semi-retired. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching, to me, is an inspirational profession. Teachers must be inspired and inspire others. I draw my inspiration from my students. If my students are inspired, they will actively learn and begin to inspire others. With passion, students will begin to see themselves accomplish their goals. This will only have a positive effect on them and those around them, whether it be in the classroom, at home or out in the community.
I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology with a concentration in Political Science and Spanish. I currently hold a valid state of Florida teaching license (K-6). I have four years of experience in the classroom, specifically 5th grade. I have a passion for helping others and feel this quality is essential for the challenging job of ensuring that every child, no matter their background or circumstance, receives an outstanding education.

I am a motivated teacher who desires to see the goals of the student achieved. Therefore, my teaching style takes the shape of the student, where some students are visual learners, whereas others are auditory or kinesthetic learners. Each style of learning has unique characteristics that enable the student to learn much greater when the learning style is known. By offering the student a survey of questions, I am better able to mold my teaching to their learning style and thus help the student reach their greatest potential for the subject at hand.
