My comments on tutoring Organic Chemistry : Expert at all Organic Chemistry concepts. Partcularly good at breaking down the main concepts of structure and bonding, resonance, acid-base chemistry, alkanes, cycloalkanes, functional groups, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination reactions, alkenes and alkynes, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, and sulfides, as well as the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, including not only hydrocarbons but also compounds with any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur.

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. Maybe you learn by intuition and need to just jump in and work a problem or two with me step-by-step and discover the pattern of what's going on and pick up the FEEL of it. So... ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The school is the place where the tools and environment are available for students to satisfy their curiosity and desire to learn. The challenge for any teacher is to identify the needs of students coming from diverse backgrounds. In the classroom, teaching means delivering the principles and concepts in a manner that students can understand and relate to. It is also important to connect the theory and application. For example, relating textbook knowledge of enzymes to real world applications such as drug metabolism can have a tremendous impact on generating the interests of students and helping them retain, explore and exploit the basic knowledge delivered in a course. A highly engaging lecture may inspire students to become curious about material that is beyond the scope of the class. Therefore, outside of the classroom, teacher accessibility is vital. An open door policy is c ... read more

I really enjoy working with young teens. I have worked in high schools for 25 years in Virginia and West Virginia. I have always had good rapport with teens and have enjoyed interacting with them. I have been trained in the Constructivist approach to teaching, but have had to change my style of teaching in order to cover materials necessary for SOL testing in recent years. I know that students retain more knowledge when they are involved in discovering new information and would love to have the latitude to teach in that manner again. I feel like I have made a difference in many young people's lives throughout my career.
I have taught just about all secondary levels of science throughout my teaching career. I have typically worked in county schools where each member of the department had to take on multiple tasks. I have taught chemistry, physics, biology, earth science, environment ... read more
