A Little Bit About Me...

I like to be interactive- when I'm teaching I prefer to work through a problem with a student together the first time, letting the student more or less watch me. The second time through, we approach the problem with a little more weight placed on the student. The third time I ask the student to attempt the problem on his/her own, and I'm available for questions.

My comments on tutoring Earth Science : I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade. I am certified K-6th grade. I also taught advanced math in a GED/HiSet program. I currently teach ESOL/CIVICS for an Adult School.

My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. I love tutoring anyone who is of high school or college age. I firmly believe that when a student doesn't understand something in one way, present it in a different way so that the concept may be understood in a different way. Everyone has a different learning style so evolving the technique to meet the individuals need is paramount. I have been tutoring since high school. When I was in high school, I tutored my brother in elementary level math. When I was in college, I tutored students in chemistry and math. I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry and have also had numerous math courses. I can tutor in any math subject up to calculus 2 and up to any undergraduate chemistry course.
I find that the best way to tutor my students is to find out what they are struggling with the most in a subject and then helping them with the basics in that subject. I work with the student on the basics and then build up to more difficult material. I am patient with students of all ages. I believe that knowing the basics of a subject is always important. First I would like to get to know the student and parents, focusing mainly on the student's interests and goals as well as how they feel about the particular subject they will be tutored in. After that I would have the student show me where they currently are in class and what they need help with. Then, depending on the particular circumstances, I would create a plan to get the student caught up and self-sufficient as quickly as possible. Even though fast results are what I hope for, the student would set the pace of the sessions.
