I used to hate math, now I love it.

i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.
I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.

My comments on tutoring SAT - Math : Expert at all SAT Math concepts. Particularly good at showing students how to eliminate incorrect answer choices and guess intelligently and strategically for higher scores. Also very familiar with the core concepts tested over and over again on the SAT Math.

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. A Little Bit About Me...

When I was young, I chose to pursue a career in Software Engineering because it was a practical and exciting way to make use of my passion for math. After working for nine years, I became a full mother. I began volunteering at the schools every chance I could. When my children left elementary school behind, I realized I wanted to teach math. I have been a middle school teacher of math for 8 years. My positions have included teaching all math subjects from Math 6 to Geometry.
