I am a native of Puerto Rico. I learned English as a second language at the age of 11 years old. I recall the difficulty I had in learning the English language while at the same time trying to make it through the 5th grade. The task was frustrating and often overwhelming. Working towards my B.S. in environmental studies I had the opportunity to work as a high school tutor in mathematics and science. I worked with children in a traditional manner, tutoring them after school by working through homework problems and past test/quiz questions. After graduation I began educating children at a nature center in a less traditional way.
