A Little Bit About Me...

Prior to pursuing my teaching degree, I operated an in-home daycare center for ten years for ages 6 mos. and up. SES tutor since October of 2011- Provided SES tutoring for elementary aged students in Reading, Comprehension and Language. Tutor for high school aged students. Currently, providing tutoring as an independent tutor primarily to elementary and middle school aged children in a variety of subjects.

Elementary and Middle School Tutoring

2012-2013-SES Tutor, Escambia County, Florida- Provided tutoring for elementary aged students via a vendor for the county, Tutored Reading and Comprehension and Math to students who did not score well on standardized tests. 2010-2013-Private Tutor for several companies and independently, Tutored students of all ages in a variety of subjects at local libraries and in their homes.
One on one approach using a variety of instructional materials such as workbooks, worksheets, diagrams, flash cards, independent writing assignments and educational websites to promote and improve learning skills. I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

I love teaching and history. I believe that anybody can learn anything. I think if someone has not learned something it is because someone has not taught it to them at all or they have not been taught in the right way. I believe anyone can reach a high education level if they are nurtured by educators who believe in them and are patient.
At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga I received an excellent education where I got my BA in History with a minor in Sociology. There I was taught by excellent professors who instilled in me passions for history, sociology, and intellectual discussion. I also wrote many papers which have given me good grammatical skills. I also gave many speeches and took part in many discussions which have given me good speaking skills. I want to apply this education and experience by working as a tutor for you.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always wanted to teach but enjoyed the research that was available working for a large chemical company. I had the opportunity to teach Organic while I was working and enjoyed it but the time constraints were tough. I am now retired from industry and will be teaching in the Chemistry Department at the University of West Florida. I am very enthusiastic about chemistry and that comes through in my teaching and tutoring. I have made a very good living doing something I love to do and that is reflected in my teaching style.
