I studied 3 years (6 semesters) of Japanese in college- 2 years at UNCG and 1 year at Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, Japan. I have continued to practice reading, writing, and speaking. Other than my time studying abroad, I spent 2 months Summer'11 doing a homestay, and returned for another month long stay March 2014.

Flexible. I am currently using Genki textbooks for beginners and Tobira textbooks for intermediate level. I use zoom or skype to meet online. I also use the google drive and the google document for sharing information and files with students.
I have experience teaching Japanese to non-native speakers from a variety of backgrounds including ages, native languages, as well as proficiency levels. I have tutored people aged from 5 to 60 years old. I enjoyed working with all of my students. I emphasize understanding the principle as opposed to just “getting the answer”. Sometimes a student will get frustrated with me because of that, but I’m committed to teaching how to fish and not just handing out fish. For example, with a mathematical problem, I may throw out additional problems revolving around the same principle at hand to make sure the student really understands as opposed to just getting past one question. Similarly, in a linguistic setting, after the student feels he or she understands the given word or grammatical structure, I will ask the student to construct additional sentences to make sure they really get it.
