Virginia L - MIlton, NH 03851 (31.6 mi) - Physics Tutor - $38.00/hr.
The hallmark of my teaching at Colby was my availability to students who needed academic help. I offered individual assistance to students during pre-arranged hours or when they simply dropped by my office. I found this type of contact with students to be particularly rewarding. My starting assumption is that any student can master any subject given sufficiently clear explanations and enough time to absorb the material. It is crucial to first find out what the student knows and what the points of confusion are. In the process, I encourage students to verbalize both their knowledge and their questions. Thus, tutoring is the opposite of lecturing and it lets students take charge of and set the pace of their own learning. I taught undergraduate Physics for 9 years at Colby College, a liberal arts college in Waterville, Maine. I emphasized both conceptual understanding and problem solving. S

Lisa P - Canterbury, NH 03224 (32.6 mi) - Physics Tutor - $38.00/hr.
I currently teach high school science. In the past four years I have taught classes such as physical science (an introductory course to physics and chemistry), biology and anatomy & physiology. I currently have a BS in Animal Science and a Master's of Art and Teaching in General Science. I also hold certification to teach Biology in the state of New Hampshire. I enjoy teaching high schoolers for a variety of reasons. Mostly because of how honest I can be with them. I enjoy teaching hands-on, real life application of the sciences in a way that students can understand the concept as well as the usefulness to them out in the real world. My goal is not to be the student's friend or even their favorite teacher, but to be fair and prepare them for what life might throw at them outside of the classroom. I want them to have the tools and discipline to succeed in the real world.

Cayle C - Canterbury, NH 03224 (32.6 mi) - Physics Tutor - $36.00/hr.
I have been a physics and mathematics tutor for my fellow students at the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario. Also, I served as a physics T.A. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before I transferred to Waterloo. Finally, I was a substitute teacher for two years at Belmont Middle School and Belmont High School, in Belmont, New Hampshire. My teaching style is simple but effective. With mathematics and physics, the student retains an idea, with the added benefit of a solid intuition if he or she is fortunate enough to work through a problem using his or her's own insights. Guiding the student with the systematic offering of penetrating questions seems to be one of the most powerful methods to aid in the understanding of mathematical and physical phenomena.

David K - Concord, VT 05824 (40.2 mi) - Physics Tutor - $40.00/hr.
My scholastic work includes a PhD in Mathematics and a MS in Electrical Engineering. I have taught and done research in mathematics for over 30 years and have tutored students at the high school and college level during the same period, as well as mentoring them in research projects. One of the more enjoyable aspects of my career was working with students in one-on-one tutoring situations. This extensive experience has helped me develop my Socratic tutoring method, described below. My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. The answers to these questions enable me to determine where the student's difficulties lie and how to address them. I don't believe that telling someone a fact or algorithm or the answer to a problem has much lasting value, so I attempt to lead the student to her or hi

I believe that my strengths include attention to detail, a flexible but firm teaching approach, and a genuine concern for each student's learning. Below is a selection of comments that students wrote on my evaluations.
•I honestly think he was the best professor I've ever had. Not condescending, willing to help, nice, thorough with material. Well taught. (Spring 2008)
•Dan is a great teacher, Also goes out of his was to help students. Keep everything the same and thanks for a great semester. (Spring 2009)
•He can explain material very well in one on one sessions (Spring 2009)
•Willingness to answer questions and take the time to go through detailed explanations. Willingness to help. (Summer 2009) I have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire where I taught a total of eight courses including vector calculus (calculus III) and elect

I help point to the truth, aiding the student in discovery. I try to avoid being overly didactic, and prefer to work by asking questions. The most satisfying thing about teaching is being able to witness and participate in the process of comprehension. As an undergraduate I worked at the mathematics tutor lab in our department. As a PhD student I both taught and assisted in the teaching of mathematics courses at the university level. Also I have experience with privately tutoring elementary, jr. high and high school students.
