I worked as an in home private ABA therapist for two separate families, each with a child with autism. I worked individually with both children approximately 8-12 hours per week for over a year. I taught in a traditional ABA classroom with six students on the autism spectrum and all with other severe disabilities. I have also volunteered for many years as a bible school teacher.
I would have to say that my teaching style is flexibility. I believe that it is necessary to gauge your students as a group and individually before deciding on which teaching methods would be most effective. I believe that naturalistic teaching is important. I am a former UConn graduate (1984) with a BS in Marketing. Many of my electives were in mathematics, enabling me to work as a student tutor on campus. I have also completed coursework in anatomy and physiology. In addition to tutoring college level students I have worked with elementary and middle school children in church youth groups, assisting with bible verse memorization and reading skills,as well as staging music productions. My experience also includes homeschooling my own children and assisting in classrooms.
My teaching style is relaxed, but focused. I believe all children can be natural learners, especially when they find something that interests them. Patience is the key with children.
