Unique Tutor

I often use word games or riddles as rewards for good work. It motivates effort from my students and makes them listen more closely. With my esl students, I made sure to apply new words to their life in order to gain the most retention of the new vocabulary words. The approach I use of ask students to draw from their own lives in order to illustrate meaning and comprehension encourages a dailogue that works well with any vocabulary words for any age group.

I like keeping kids engaged. Teaching isn't just about making sure a student knows the facts, but also about helping them develop a passion for learning. Explaining information in several different ways helps individuals as well as groups learn to the fullest, and allows the students to think about subjects in several different ways.
I volunteered in high school and college tutoring students to read. In high school I was also a music tutor, and a general tutor. Holding a degree in English and History has taught me a lot about many areas of learning that could be used to teach kids effectively.

A Little Bit About Me...

I think teaching style should revolve around the needs of the student. The last person I tutored, I created worksheets and practical exercises that served to help him learn the material. Worksheets worked well since he was studying for a final exam. The music videos and lyrics I told him to watch and read, were all meant to reinforce the grammatical lesson. In his case, when we met in person we did oral and speaking practice in addition to reviewing the worksheets. That is just one example, and I think that it really does revolve around the specific needs and goals of the student.
I worked for four (4) years at the Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy, I tutored the last couple of years a few high school students in Spanish, I have translated for the VITA tax clinic/Spanish Coalition/Latino Empowerment Outreach Network, and I have served as a translator for Cracker Barrel.

My teaching style revolves around a desire to make complicated subjects as simple and accessible as possible. In teaching so many different types of learners, my methodologies are as varied as my students. A teacher's primary responsibilities are to listen, adapt and teach to the needs of a given student--all driven toward the goal of true education. Regardless, my teaching is grounded in the fact that greatest gift I can offer a student is my time and dedication. If a student truly feels how much I care about his or her betterment, that student's success is inevitable.
Throughout my entire life, regardless of the endeavor, I have been driven toward education--both of myself and my responsibility to teach others. My teaching style is customized to each student's needs. Because all students have different learning styles my instructions are patterned to maximize that student's particular style. After evaluating each student with a baseline test, goals and objectives based on the state's/district's curriculum are determined. My style is setting high but realistic expectations with rigorous assignments. I also try to have an overdose of encouragement and make the learning session fun time for students.

I love teaching and working with others, especially children. I first like to start with finding out where the child is confused by going over and re-teaching past assignments that were misunderstood. I like to go over past tests and make sure they understand what they missed and teach them the correct answer. I believe that this is very important so they can grasp future material. I will then try many different teaching styles to either find what works best for the particular child or to keep things interesting and keep the child wanting to learn. Nothing is too hard for any child it is just how the material is presented and the fact that someone is taking one on one time with your child to make sure they understand before moving to the next topic.
