I hold two degrees, a B.A. in Architecture which I achieved immediately following high school and a B.S. in Civil Engineering that I earned 20 years later. In the years between degrees I worked mainly in the construction industry providing blueprints for houses and various concrete structures. Going back to school after 20 years was difficult in that I had to re-teach myself some of the basic math (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus) that I had forgotten because it is used to solve many advanced engineering problems. Besides myself I have tutored ages ranging from middle school to high school in math and physics. Math is a series of steps that one must follow. When these steps are arranged correctly the problem fits together like a puzzle. It is essential to understand the lower level maths because these will be the pieces that are used to solve more complex math problems

I have worked as an elementary school teacher for 7 years. I have been fortunate enough to teach grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. In my experience I have found that children build confidence through small successes. My philosophy is to set maintainable goals allowing students to meet them frequently building confidence and motivation. I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. They need to value what they are really good at and share that with their peers. This also creates miniature "experts" which makes all kids feel good. Once a child feels successful; in one area it encourages them to tackle something they are less comfortable with.

During my career as a researcher in the field of software engineering, my work depended on mathematical thinking. I have spent considerable energy, from my time working toward my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in engineering and through my subsequent career, communicating ideas through writing, lecturing, tutoring, and creating and teaching courses. Watching my own children going through high school has motivated me for the past six years to focus my attention on teaching and tutoring, concentrating on math. I have worked with homeless families to further thier education and their children. I have created, promoted, and taught in a GED program for young adults up to seniors in odrer for them to aquire their GED. I am hands on. I am very parient and to not get frustrated easily. I do not have an age preference becuase I enjoy working with all age groups. I am personaly continuing with my Masters in September of this year. I cannot express how important education is to further your ability to care and provide for your family. I love working with children on this subject as well. I have taken MANY communication and diversity/ethics classes and have a firm understanding of how to approach and communicate with people on many educational and social levels. I LOVE to communicate and teach how to better communicate with others.
