Enthusiastic and Passionate Chess Tutor

When I teach I try to instill a deep love for the subject matter. My philosophy is that a student cannot be forced to learn but must want to learn. I achieve this by individualizing my lessons for each student and their playing style. Everyone learns differently and each lesson reflects this fact. Before our first lesson, I encourage students to tell me a little about themselves and to also send me some of their games. During our first lesson, I try to establish a baseline of skill and playing style. At the end of our lessons and, only If the student wishes, fun work may be assigned to reinforce concepts learned during the lesson.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children of all ages. My teaching style I would describe as a friendship in which I work together. I have found as long as you are a positive force and are willing to put in as much time as it takes, you can help the student reach their fullest potential.
I currently hold an associate’s degree from Grand Rapids Community College in applied arts as well as an associate’s degree from Davenport University in accounting. I will also graduate with a bachelor’s degree in accounting on April 25, 2010. I worked for over three years for the Boardwalk Fitness Center where I was the general manager in charge of over 20 employees. I was also responsible for the general accounting duties, payroll, and customer billing. I am also an Eagle scout, where I spent years doing community service and teaching younger scounts.

I worked as a substitute teacher for a charter high school in St. Louis, MO directly out of undergrad. I taught most subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Algebra, History and Language Arts. I feel comfortable in my ability to teach most subjects and have no issue working in difficult classrooms as I have grown accustomed to such environments working in St. Louis.
Being no stranger to difficult classroom settings, I understand that ideal teaching conditions rarely exist. I enjoy to challenge of encouraging more distracted students to learn, and possess the compassion and patience to work with most students. If a teacher can earn a student's respect, which comes easier for a younger instructor such as myself, then positive reinforcement has a much greater impact on that student's motivation to learn. My experience teaching lends the skill to gain student's trust in confidence ... read more

I have always been very interested in education and the pursuit of knowledge. I remember, at an early age, being the only child I knew who actually wanted to go to class every day. This thirst inspired me to excel in all of my courses, and to enroll in a prestigious university where I studied English Literature and Philosophy. While there, I took an interest in writing, both in process and result. I spent three years working as a University Writing Tutor. During that time, I honed both my grammatical and tutoring skills. I also worked as an editor at a prominent university magazine, which allowed me to interact with and advise many burgeoning writers. As a philosophy major, I worked extensively with younger students sharpening arguments and researching projects. Additionally, I spent several semesters volunteering at a local after-school daycare and tutoring service for elementary ... read more
