I taught 7th grade English for one year and 5th grade general education for three years. Prior to teaching, I tutored writing and study skills in our university acedemic skills department. I have also tutuored adults learning English as a second language and adults learning to read. Additionally, I have worked at after school programs, homeschooled a student who could not attend school for 3 months because of a brain injury, and volunteered as a reading partner for an elementary school student for three years. My most previous work experience has been as a pastor of two rurual congregations in Iowa. My family has recently relocated to Richland Center, WI. My teaching is relational and student centered. I especially enjoy working one-on-one with students because I am able to concentrate on his/her weaknesses. I like to use manipulatives and concrete examples whenever possible. After introducing a concept I work out examples with the student, then have him/her work through several examples while I watch and, finally, have the student work independently on a set of problems. If there are still errors I try to approach the concept from a different perspective and then repeat the process. I have taught mathematics in grades 3 through college. I especially enjoy working with high school students and college algebra and trigonometry students. Since my retirement from college teaching I have been tutoring at Sylvan Learning, teaching some grade school math, algebra, geometry and ACT prep.
