I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. After receiving a B.S. degree in elementary education (1-8) and an ESL certification, I taught K-6 for 13 years. After that, I was a math consultant for one year. For the next 6 years, I tested, diagnosed, and wrote psycho-educational reports for students to see if they qualified for placement in special education classes and set up their individual educational programs. My teaching style is traditional but creative; I believe in learning the basics first. Once the basics are mastered, then the student can move on to the more creative lessons. I also like variety in my lessons because I like to keep my students interested in what I am teaching. For instance, I like to offset grammar with skits which include the grammar that they have been practicing through oral and written exercises.
