Special Education is one of my top subjects! I have over 11 years of experience of working with people with autism, down syndrome, and other disabilities, including behavioral disabilities

I like a very engaging style of teaching, using visuals or work sheets, charts, or picture to have hands on to help the participant learn. I am incredibly energetic when it comes to learning and want those I tutor and teach to succeed and enjoy the process of learning.
While in university I studied art history, studio art, and international relations. I was a teaching assistant for many art history classes, including renaissance, modern, and post modern art. I also was a teaching assistant for several studio art classes including drawing, photography, and silk screen. I also sturdied international relations in university, with an emphasis on the Middle East and Europe, particularly Cold War and terrorism. My comments on tutoring Special Education : I am an EC TA in a self-contained AU classroom and I am still trying to work on my Masters in Special Education.

I like to get on the child's level and teach that way. I like to ask the children what their best way is to learn and what are some of their favorite things are so I can incorporate them into the lesson.
I have been working with Elementary children for over 10 years now. I have helped all ages with homework, sports, and life skills (current job now as EC TA). I also have been coaching for the past five years in cheerleading and soccer, but in different age groups. I have been in the school system for the past year in a half and have worked on phonics, math, science, and life and social skills with AU students.

Teaching is an exciting profession for me. I believe all kids including the most intellectually disabled can learn. I believe in setting high but realistic goals for students. Learning starts before children enter school and should be integrated between home and school. I am a firm believer in laying strong foundations in the lower grades, and building upon this as the child develops. Teaching children through systematic and explicit instruction has worked best for the students in my classes. Teaching children basic knowledge and then applying those skills to real-world experiences is my method of choice. I am a dedicated teacher and care about my students’ progress.
Four years ago, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from a local university. I received a BS in Rehabilitation Studies. This degree prepared me to work with our special population. My ultimate desire was to work with childre ... read more

As a patient and caring teacher and tutor, I understand that learning is an individual process, so I create lessons, assignments, activities, and environments conducive to each individual student's learning. Furthermore, in addition to teaching students necessary skills to help them achieve academic success, I find it is also important to provide praise and recognition to students for each level of success they acquire. This shows them that they can learn and be successful academically.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have noticed over the years that many students can identify their specific needs when it comes to learning. I see myself as a facilitator in helping students to learn while keeping in mind the different learning styles: visual, aural, kinesthetic. I combine discipline with a sense of humor (which I think is essential especially when students become anxious about a new class or a subject in which they have difficulty). I act as a guide as well as provider of information to students. At the same time, I try my best to listen to or watch the body language of all of my students in order to best accommodate their needs.

My teaching style is flexible. Since I work with children that have special needs (specifically Autsim), I have to be creative in my approach and adapt to the instructional needs of the student. For example, many of my students require direct and explicit instruction; however, some of the students are nonverbal and artistic and require a more constructive approach.
