My comments on tutoring Reading : I have a BA in English

While in College I was a part time nanny for a single Mom with twins. I started taking care of the twins when they were 2 and continued until they were almost 4. I was an assistant teacher part time at little playmates preschool daycare. During my time there I worked with the 2 and 3 year old class and the 4 and 5 year old class. I also helped the older children with homework. I was responsible for helping with meals, playtime and supervising outside activities. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, my wife and I moved to South Korea and taught English. This opportunity allowed us to gain teaching experience and become absorbed in another culture. Upon completing our one year contract we then decided to move to Costa Rica and continue teaching English for six months. I am currently working on a Ph.D. at UNM and plan to become a professor.

While working as a assistant professor at a number of institutions (including the University of Chicago, University of Texas ,San Antonio and several others) I found I almost always had to teach my students how to take notes, how to read to locate crucial information and how best to structure written assignments. I have also had a lengthy career as a print journalist and have developed my communication skills to a fairly high level. In a word, my teaching style is Socratic. Often that means I respond to a student’s question with a question that enables them to figure out answers for themselves. Other times, my questions are designed to stimulate ideas beyond the student’s view so they need to “stretch” a bit. I firmly believe this style encourages the student’s creativity and belief in their own capabilities. Coupled to the formal teaching and certainly as important is the relationship between the teacher and students that generates growth. I graduated with a BA in mathematics from Metropolitan State College of Denver. I also hold a minor in Reading and the equivalent of a minor in secondary education. Math teaches logical thinking and I have ultimately loved this aspect about the subject! My reading minor also taught writing techniques though it was being an avid writer myself that allowed me to teach how to write a paper in 30 seconds or less that causes students to write a full page or more in 30 minutes or less.
