My comments on tutoring Special Education : Chess

I am from Kazakhstan but familiar with chess in US. My title is candidate master with FIDE ELO 2236, the information about me is on the website http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=13700820 My last succesful FIDE rated games are on the website http://ratings.fide.com/view_games.phtml?id=137008 20&name=%22Ten__Viktor(KAZ)%22 where I reached the IM norm. I spent about about 10 months in Cornell University in 2008-2009 years as Fulbright Visiting Scientist with doing chess things, mainly, in Syracuse University. Once, I gave a simultaneous game for students and professors of SU. For the reference you can contact to Ken Frieden kfrieden@syr.edu.

"Educating One Mind at a Time"

I emphasize student engagement when I tutor. With hands-on activities and visual aids, I work to make sure all of my students enjoy their sessions and have deep understanding of the material we cover. I assess where a student needs to start and try to help them excel from there. I utilize all of my experience to get the best from each student.

While attending graduate school I worked as a substitute teacher which allowed me to gain experience working with children of various ages and levels. I enjoy working with children and families and being able to positively impact and enrich their lives. For the past 7 years I have taught psycho-educational groups, in my most recent place of employment I worked hands on with young adults helping them develop independent living skills. I am fluent in Spanish as I grew up speaking the language in addition to some formal education to improve on grammar and spelling.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am an active teacher, especially when allowed to create my own curriculum. I love to incorporate lectures with powerpoints, videos with discussions, and book readings with field trips. I think the best way to get young people involved in learning is to keep their minds thinking and never reach the point of predictability. The last thing people accuse me of is monotony or predictability, and it is this very quality that keeps then engaged and makes me a very likable and successful educator.
I received a bachelors degree in both history and sociology which gave me the credentials to teach Sociology 101 classes at the college level while attaining my masters degree, which I then used to teach as an instructor for nine months at two separate colleges. I am finishing up my second masters degree, and want nothing more than to share the knowledge I have learned with others.
