A Little Bit About Me...

I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.
I received a BS in Computer Science, software engineering, and a minor in Mathematics. Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goals with appropriate lesson plans to enhance each student’s weakness in specific areas in mathematics. I have always ended up in leadership positions which gives me the opportunity to teach. I generally supervise adults and in this role act as teacher for processes, procedures, rules and general good practices. I am a great learner, which I think makes for a great teacher because I want to be sure that whomever I am working with finds the excitement in really understanding a topic. Many of the people I work with tell me I should be a teacher. I do also have two children, girls, seven and five. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style focuses on teaching students how to find the big picture. If they understand what it is they are trying to do, then showing them how to get there becomes easier. Any student can learn math, and have the capability to understand numbers, this just comes harder for some and easier for others. In my past I have benefited greatly from some math teachers, and fallen behind in classes where I was not getting what the teacher was talking about. Tutors can be a great help in pushing students over a difficult concept or idea. Then, when the student is back on track, they can take their education in their own hands again.
