My comments on tutoring Sociology : So much of being expert in any field is having the ability to teach my students to use effective study skills and learning strategies. This I can do for you although I excelled at many sociology classes in undergraduate and graduate school.

My teaching style is fun: relaxed and engaging for my students and for me too. I am serious about giving my clients the best and richest learning situation as possible. I use a modality designed just for that student and perhaps not offered at school. Since I am in a one on one setting I can ideally focus on just that one student's personal needs. I communicate clearly with all stake holders to ensure I am meeting the learner's needs and expectations. Sociology is one of my top subjects!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.

I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. Working with the children transformed my life and taught me the importance of knowledge.

After returning to college to get my teaching certificate I taught 5th grade for one year. I then taught at a high school in Salinas, California for four years. As an elementary teacher I taught all subjects except science. I taught various history and social studies classes to the high school students including World History, honors U.S. History, Psychology and Current Events. Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, or sensory learner and teach to those senses. I would need to tailor my lesson plans by making the information more interactive for students who have special needs or are English language learners to make sure that they are learning the information.
