Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! I have had advanced training to work with children with dyslexia and received my Orton-Gillingham certification. I have worked in a center for children with this disability.

We work hard in my sessions but we also laugh a lot. I provide plenty of praise and positive reinforcement and celebrate even the smallest improvement.
I have worked with children experiencing reading difficulties for many years and have specialized training in multiple advanced reading techniques. I have tutored in a center for children with dyslexia and am currently working part time in an elementary school with first and second graders struggling with reading. I am dyslexic myself, but was not diagnosed until college. I remember too well the shame and frustration of not being able to read. Dyslexia does not go away, but I have learned many ways to work around it. I work to make children understand that their reading problems are not their fault, and that together we can overcome the barriers in their way.

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught for 8 years in a Title 1 Elementary school in North Fort Myers. The population was and still is over 90% free and reduced lunch. I taught 4th and 5th grades for 4 years and then taught science as an exploratory to all of the students for 4 years. I developed my curriculum for all grade levels in science, connected them to the building block and Sunshine State Standards, and created assessments. Currently, I am teaching Life Science to 7th graders at a Cape Coral middle school which is 5 miles form my home. I taught Science for 6th, 7th and 8th ESE students who had learning disabilities there for two years and ESOL students last year.
I like to teach science because it gives me many opportunities to teach using my preferred styles. I like to use cooperative learning, have the students investigate questions, and use hands on activities with real world examples. I try to bui ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching young children takes dedication and respect. As a teacher, parent, tutor, cargiver, or whatever role one is in a young child's early years is also an example and a role model. Children have to trust you, feel comfortable with you, and must like you in order for them to respond to you. During positive interactions with elementary school students I also work on communication, social, and emotional skills. My goal is to provide an easier method for struggling students to learn without the frustration. That was exactly what I did for my daughter. I believe that young children are our future and have to be prepared for every challenge in the 21st century.
Having an associate degree in both the Paralegal and Early Childhood Education fields motivates me to stand up for the rights of children and to work with and teach young children as they grow and learn. I have worked w ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My first work experience began with counseling Severely Emotionally Disturbed children and their families. In this capacity I worked with the schools in order to enable the students to see the value of education and to work through their personal problems in order to be successful in the school setting. I have been a teacher/trainer for 12 years in the Lee County school system. The levels I taught included diverse populations of middle and high school students. Most of my classes were comprised of ESE students and in fact there were several years that I concentrated on Severely Emotionally Disturbed students in a special program. Throughout both of these careers I have been extremely successful in establishing rapport and trust with these children and have been triumphant in motivating this population to care about themselves and their education. My passions are teaching ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my studies I have learned that all students learn differently. When teaching in a classroom, I will have to discover the way each student learns individually. An important aspect of my teaching experience has been to get down on that students level, and look at the struggles each student has in the classroom. I modify lessons in order to have each student adapt them to his or her own learning style. I believe that each student is willing to learn, but needs to discover the best learning style suitable to their abilities.
As an English Education major, I have had numerous encounters in the classroom with each of my classroom practicums. After completing my degree in the fall of 2009, I will have over three semesters of classroom experience, working with students from the sixth grade to the twelfth grade. I have also worked as a childcare provider for several years, ... read more

I am looking forward to sharing the skills which were developed over 30 years of teaching. My elementary classroom experience includes teaching grades 2,3,4,5 and 6. The successful experiences I had working with learning disabled students, unmotivated students, and gifted students brought me much satisfaction. One on my strengths is my ability to motivate and inspire students with different learning styles across many grade levels.
It is very important to find out what skills sets a child needs to be reinforced. The activities the student engages in must be based on his strengths and weaknesses. I believe in working with the student to explain their thought process. I do this by asking questions and helping them realize how to attack a task. I find the student by verbalizing what they are thinking is able to progress at a faster rate. This helps the student self confidence a ... read more
