Experienced Tutor, Degree in Math!

I helped many students who had previously given up hope to pass the CLAST exam and I taught the math portion of an SAT prep course through FGCU's CAA. I tutored LD students through Adaptive Services at FGCU I taught labs at FGCU for intermediate and college algebra, statistics and business calculus. I taught AP Calculus and AP Statistics at a private school. I taught Pre-calc and Algebra II through Lee County School District.
Practice-Theory-Practice. I try to stay very focused on doing examples and practice problems. Some theory is necessary for a deep understanding, but it has to come at the right time. The student first needs some practice or at least an attempt to appreciate the process involved in solving a problem. Then I try and bring to light any issues and cover some theory. Then we do more practice.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to teach science because it gives me many opportunities to teach using my preferred styles. I like to use cooperative learning, have the students investigate questions, and use hands on activities with real world examples. I try to build relationships with all of my students and their families.
I taught for 8 years in a Title 1 Elementary school in North Fort Myers. The population was and still is over 90% free and reduced lunch. I taught 4th and 5th grades for 4 years and then taught science as an exploratory to all of the students for 4 years. I developed my curriculum for all grade levels in science, connected them to the building block and Sunshine State Standards, and created assessments. Currently, I am teaching Life Science to 7th graders at a Cape Coral middle school which is 5 miles form my home. I taught Science for 6th, 7th and 8th ESE students who had learning d ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Everytime I see a student's eyes light up after learning something new or interesting to them it makes me feel like I have done something great. I am a very patient person and love helping students achieve academic success. When a student says to me that they need a little extra help with something it means that they want to learn and when a student wants to learn I am all for it. I want students to reach their highest potential and I will do what ever it takes, pulling from my adjuncting and substituting experiences, to help that student in anyway I can.
I have a BA and MA in Communications, I was an adjunct professor in Communications as well as a substitute teacher in a high school. I will be starting the Teacher Immersion program at FGCU in the Summer. I am looking forward to teaching High School English and Speech, while doing Adjuncting at a local college. My teaching style totally depends on the student(s) that I am working with. Not all children learn at the same pace, nor do they all have the same attention span. That said, I find that applying the “token economy” approach, in getting the children to focus on the task, is very effective. If given time and patience, children are capable of accomplishing most anything.
I have been working with children for more than 20 years, as a tutor and mentor. My profession and academic education was in business and psychology, but my passion has always been working with children. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, for Lee County Schools. And for the last 5 years, I have spent my summer months traveling throughout SE Asia, volunteering time in orphanages and schools, teaching the children English.

I think learning and discovering is a "magical" experience. My memories of the first time I learned about the solar system and space exploration was mind-boggling. That is what I seek to bring to students--to find their interests and develop them so they have the drive to learn. I sincerely believe the process of learning and interacting with adults or mentors is how we learn social skills and the art of personal interaction that will ultimately determine our level of success. Tutoring is more than helping students achieve academic excellence; if done well, it's about instilling habits for success.
As a United States Air Force Academy graduate, I believe in the value of leadership, quality teaching and training. I have a BS in Basic Sciences; my strengths are in math, science and writing. I have strong spatial orientation skills and have written analyses of world military opera ... read more

I feel that I am a natural educator. I often find my self teaching people simple tasks at work, or being called upon by friends and family members to assist them, or their children with their homework. I like to keep learning fun and interesting for all students. I believe that if you invoke an emotional response, like happiness, when you are teaching something, the pupil is much more likely to retain the information.
All through high school and college I was a tutor. I have taken numerous writing extensive courses. This qualifies me to tutor English. I have also taken many courses that concentrated on Social Studies. Science was always one of my favorite courses in high school, therefore I took a few science courses in college as well. I have previously tutored students in test preparation, and I have taken the FCAT myself. Math was another strong subject of mine, and I have also ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Chemical Enigineering graduate, I was exposed to many courses in higher level mathematics as well as all subject matter ranging from physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and biology. In addition, I have written many papers and essays, both scientific and artistic in nature. I have even been published in a scientific research journal as a co-author. For two years during college I tutored my fellow students in organic chemistry, averaging about 10 hours per week.
My style is to give detailed examples and descriptions and then let the students try to work through the problems I have selected for them. Throughout a given session I coach the students by answering all their questions along the way and providing positive feedback. Through this method I hope for each student to increase their proficiency in the material by the end of the session. Each new session is be ... read more

I cannot say that I am set in any teaching style. I am green and haven’t exactly got a teaching style. I know through years of schooling and interacting with peers people learn differently and do better or worse depending on the teacher they have and that teachers style. I believe teaching methods in a tutorial environment need to be adaptive to the student. You’ll need to communicate with the student and feel him/her out and see how he/she learns best. I am patient and confident in my ability to be able to help others learn. My sister had a learning disability and I enjoyed helping her get through school as we grew up. I think it is essential that a student has confidence in himself/herself and believes they can do it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy the challenge of bringing the best out of a student's ability. My demeanor in the classroom is very calm and patient, which creates a relaxed atmosphere. I am a firm believer in keeping the students involved during my class and will frequently call on students to participate in solving problems. Every student has the ability to do well in school. I think it is just a matter of how badly they want to succeed and as a teacher I try to tap into their potential.
I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's degree in secondary math education. During my internship in the fall of 2006, I taught Algebra 2 Honors and Geometry. Upon graduation, I was hired to teach Algebra IB at Lakeland High School and taught there for the spring semester of 2007. More About This Tutor...

As an English Education major, I have had numerous encounters in the classroom with each of my classroom practicums. After completing my degree in the fall of 2009, I will have over three semesters of classroom experience, working with students from the sixth grade to the twelfth grade. I have also worked as a childcare provider for several years, in addition to tutoring both Math and English as a part-time job.
Throughout my studies I have learned that all students learn differently. When teaching in a classroom, I will have to discover the way each student learns individually. An important aspect of my teaching experience has been to get down on that students level, and look at the struggles each student has in the classroom. I modify lessons in order to have each student adapt them to his or her own learning style. I believe that each student is willing to learn, but needs ... read more
