My comments on tutoring Algebra II : I don't know what separates Algebra I from II, from III. All I know is that I'm a proficient, knowledgeable teacher. With me, you'll learn.

To teach, one needs three skills: the ability to relate to a student, the skills necessary to convey leaning, and subject knowledge. I'm proficient in these skills. Algebra II is one of my top subjects! I have seen a student who came to me in the last two weeks of the school year with a grade of D in Algebra II raise his grade by getting a B+ on the final exam after intensive tutoring.

I have done private tutoring of high school students in math from pre-algebra to calculus and in other subjects. I have also home schooled adopted daughters from lower grades to high school level, including teaching English as a second language. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in an electric machinery laboratory for non-electrical engineering majors. My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. Experienced Tutor, Degree in Math!

Practice-Theory-Practice. I try to stay very focused on doing examples and practice problems. Some theory is necessary for a deep understanding, but it has to come at the right time. The student first needs some practice or at least an attempt to appreciate the process involved in solving a problem. Then I try and bring to light any issues and cover some theory. Then we do more practice.
I helped many students who had previously given up hope to pass the CLAST exam and I taught the math portion of an SAT prep course through FGCU's CAA. I tutored LD students through Adaptive Services at FGCU I taught labs at FGCU for intermediate and college algebra, statistics and business calculus. I taught AP Calculus and AP Statistics at a private school. I taught Pre-calc and Algebra II through Lee County School District.

I find it partucularly useful to take time to get to know the student's interests so that I can relate each subject to things that the student is familiar with. Making this connection between a difficult concept and the student's personal areas of interest helps the student feel comfortable with the subject and therefore more confident thinking through each question presented. Once confidence is established, it becomes easier for students to develop an understanding of the subject area that can be applied without the tutor present.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience, (both academic and work)has been widely varied, ranging from research and engineering to financial management in a corporate environment, followed by golf course design and landscape management. In addition I used my experience in construction and woodworking to build and market patio furniture. Unfortunately the housing depression of the mid 2000's caused the business to be non profitable and was closed. Learning is a combination of processes, emphasizing what works best. For me, the approach is to use what works best for the student to learn what needs to be learned, with the underlying objective of the student learning how to learn - meaning a self-awareness of what works best for him or her.
