Experienced high school and middle school math tutor

I have taught high school math for the past 4 years involving Algebra I and Algebra II ( at various levels) and Geometry and Pre-Calculus. I have worked as a tutor for the past 6 years in these subject areas as well. I have also worked with middle school students who were taking basic math or Pre-Algebra courses. A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent college graduate, I received a dual degree in Electrical/Computer & Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During my time there, I was a teaching assistant for Calculus I for two years. This job included conducting one hour classes 2-4 times a week to review and master basic skills needed to accomplish the course successfully. I also spent time weekly working one-on-one with students to teach concepts and review topics. I consider myself capable of helping students in any level of math up to this level and thoroughly enjoy it!
I am a firm believer that each student learns differently and the best way to teach is to find out what their style of learning is. I am a patient teacher, who works hard to find the learning style that will offer the best success for the student.

I graduate May 2009 from Simmons College with a BS in Biochemistry. My courses taken during my undergraduate career were heavily focused in the sciences. I’ve taken upper level chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses. I tutored a student in zoology for a brief period of time. I was also a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry I and II labs. As a law student, I have been committed to the public interest. I have focused my attenion on environmental issues. The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
