A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style can be expressed as hands on, or even proactive. I like to get to know my kids and figure out how I can best teach them. There are three different learning styles and I like to involve each of them when I teach. It's important to me to have a good balance when I teach to ensure that each kid gets what they need from me. I believe that this strategy can be applied to the classroom as well.
My teaching experience has been centered around a field of a court. Since the age of thirteen I have been helping a wide age group of kids learn to play soccer and basketball. When I was in high school I helped to volunteer at camps often running my own drills and games. Continuing into my college career I continued to teach soccer. Journalism is one of my top subjects! I worked as a Business reporter for 5 months and received a reward for one of my pieces.

I work hands-on, using examples. However, I am readily able to adjust to new learning styles!
I have taken creative writing and journalism courses. I have experience in the journalism field, and won an award for one of my stories. I have also done much writing on my own, including writing a full-length novel (in the works of being edited with hopes of publication). Because I have had the opportunity to work with students of many different ages and abilities, I have learned that there is no "right" way to teach/tutor. As a tutor I have had to adjust my teaching style depending on the type of student I am working with. What works for one student may not necessarily work with another. For example, if a student has a lackadaisical attitude, I will do what I can to try to motivate him/her. Other students may be very motivated, but may need help with focusing, organizing or other key skill. With all students, I try to be as patient as possible and as clear as I possibly can when I am explaining material.

In addition to my professional background, I have roughly a decade worth of experience as a volunteer (and professional) reading tutor and teacher. I worked with grade schools at Hancock and Horace Mann Elementary Schools as a volunteer tutor. I taught after-school classes at Battle Creek and Highland Park Junior High.
I am flexible and patient. I understand that reading and writing doesn't come easily to a lot of students. It is, in its own way, a skill not unlike hitting a golf ball or being a really good cook.
