Recent Graduate Looking To Help

I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I also have a minor in photography. During my time at Mercyhurst College, I worked as a writing tutor in the school’s writing center. When students entered the center, it was my job to immediately make them feel comfortable by greeting them with a friendly smile and asking what I could help them with. After this, the students’ explained their assignment and expressed any concerns they had or anything their professors wanted them to work on. I then proceeded to read their paper and used my knowledge and experience to work with them to help revise and edit the essay. As a writing tutor, I have experienced all types of work, anywhere from the beginning and helping a struggling student come up with ideas to write about, all the w ... read more

I am dedicated to assisting students in achieving their academic goals and I try my hardest to be a good role model to every student I encounter.
I have my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from a private, Catholic university. My time there taught me to be not only determined in what I do, but also ethical. My teaching style is a delicate balance of content knowledge, compassion, and flexibility. Obviously, an effective teacher should have a great understand of his or her content area, but knowing how to teach and share that knowledge is the key to an outstanding teacher. I do not see students are not robots that all process information the same, so having the compassion to see each student as an individual with different ways of processing information drives my teaching. I take the time to know and care about my students in order to be able to adjust material to meet the needs of the students as well as the standards. The last component I incorporate is flexibility. I see flexibility as a key to understanding how each student learns.
As an adult I realized that my true calling was teaching, and I advanced my education to become an educator. I am a third generation teacher and have a ... read more

Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not. While giving instruction, I strive to be patient, accomodating and respectful of the student in need. I love to give encouragement and praise for any task or assignment done well!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a peer tutoring teaching style. My goal is for the tutee to achieve success both independently and through his or her communication with others. For this to develop, I focus my efforts toward empathy and proceed to learn with the tutee. I have the knowledge to challenge the tutee with advanced objectives, and I have the responsiveness necessary to know the best time to present new challenges. Through this tutee-centered scaffolding approach, my peer tutees have achieved great success in writing, and many have become writing tutors themselves.
I have a BS in Psychology, and I have experience tutoring college students through an honors position as a Writing Fellow through Jackson Community College. I have studied, worked with, and helped publish various forms of writing. These forms include scientific journal articles (APA) and analytic essays (MLA). They also include creative ... read more

Although, I have never been in charge of my own class room I consider my teaching style energetic. I love working with students of all ages and find that teaching methods and styles tend to adapt to those individual students. I think it is important to be encouraging and patient with all students. I believe in a hand on approach where students learn from experiences and doing rather than being lectured. As an educator it is my job to get students involved in their own learning and excited about the knowledge that will shape their futures.

I enjoy working one on one with students because it is allows me to give more in depth and detailed instruction to the student based on his or her learning style. I believe in hands on learning and learning by example. All people have the ability to learn and understand any concept; I work to act as a guide from confused to accomplished.
I have always been interested and active in the education field. I enjoy working individually with students, more so than in a classroom setting. I received a Master's degree in Creative Writing and a Bachelor's in English for Secondary Education, with minors in French and Creative Writing. I have been teaching Composition at a Community College and have tutored students for many years, whether in English, basic French or even math (up to and including Algebra).

I create a positive atmosphere and help students to be responsible first to themselves and then to their community. I also try to make my students aware of their potiential and guide them in processing information by first understanding the context in which it is used. Then I like to use visuals in my teaching style. I prefer to start with testing of some kind to assess the developmental level of the student.
My teaching experience began with my work with troubled youth in Michigan. I worked with the Fine Arts Team using the arts to teach visually. I also used positive Peer Culture for helping students to deal with their problems. I slso taught history at the school. I have 8 years experience; I worked for WSI teacher staffing for 3 yrs. and 5 yrs. for the Battle Creek School System in grades K-12 in most subjects
