I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. I have taught and tutored children and adult learners. My teaching experience has been in Germany, California and Minnesota. I also tutored ACT/SAT in Minnesota.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.

My teaching style is mentoring, or sharing of knowledge, in combination with promoting the understanding of consequences. I strongly believe that learning can and should be an enjoyable experience for student, teacher and any other involved parties, such as parents. While some subjects may require rote memorization, I always try to explain the underlying reason, purpose and benefit of the material being taught.
