I am a published poet. I will reiterate whatever the student is struggling with until they really understand. I am very patient and fun! School has been the most important structure in my life since I was a kid. My parents taught me that school comes first above anything else. I took their statement very seriously. I earned a 3.9 GPA at my university with Summa Cum Laude honors. I was a dedicated student who wants to help others succeed in school. I am a babysitter, which comes hand in hand with tutoring. I often help the kids with homework when I'm babysitting. I help my old high school speech and debate team. I recently earned my bachelor's degree in English, from Iowa State University. I have always helped friends/peers with English courses, whether it be writing, editing, proofreading, etc. I have also helped many people with music, being a musician myself. I have studied musical theory and played several instruments since I was in elementary school. I would feel most comfortable tutoring in music and English subjects. I love working with anyone who is willing to learn. My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms. I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction. In addition to these things, I am a poet and fiction writer with a high level of experience and craft, and can assist students in expressing themselves creatively.
