From 1997 to 2008 I was a school technologist in Maine public schools. I organized extracurricular programs, worked with individual students and small groups, and co-taught math and science classes. My teaching centered on math, computers, physics, and general science. A Little Bit About Me...

I emphasize understanding the principle as opposed to just “getting the answer”. Sometimes a student will get frustrated with me because of that, but I’m committed to teaching how to fish and not just handing out fish. For example, with a mathematical problem, I may throw out additional problems revolving around the same principle at hand to make sure the student really understands as opposed to just getting past one question. Similarly, in a linguistic setting, after the student feels he or she understands the given word or grammatical structure, I will ask the student to construct additional sentences to make sure they really get it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to put the difficult concepts of mathematics and chemistry into words and experiences that the student can understand. In the words of one of my tutees I teach "Barney-Style". In other words I talk in words they can understand whether I'm tutoring a 4th grader or a college student. It is my goal to make the subject less scary and more fun.
