A Little Bit About Me...

Because I have been teaching since the 1970s, I have extensive experience in several teaching styles and have a creative sensibility. I prefer to assess the student before making a determination as to the choice of learning strategies. I work well in a one-on-one approach.
I am a retired college English professor who taught several college transfer courses at the community college level. I also worked as a tutor for several years at the college. I hold a master's degree in Creative Writing and English Literature. My undergraduate degree is in Speech Correction. Currently, I am writing screenplays and making short films.

My comments on tutoring GED : I taught GED prep to inmates at Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton, NC. I am proud to say that even though I only worked there for just under a year, that I saw 3 of my students graduate.

As mentioned in my earlier description, I have eighteen years experience as an educator. I have taught students of all ages from early childhood through college and non-traditional adult education. I believe in making learning fun and engaging by relating concepts to points of interest for the individual student.
Tutoring differs from teaching in that "style" is replaced by method. Some of the methods I have used in the past are rhythm and music, neumonic devices, and of course, drill and practice. I have been told that I am gifted with presenting material in novel ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

I currently have five years of teaching experience. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS degree from the University of South Florida in the fall of 2005. When teaching first grade, I was responsible for educating children ages 6-8 in all of the fundamental areas. I managed to create a loving, encouraging and educationally exciting learning environment for each and every one of my students on a daily basis. I was also responsible for maintaining student portfolios to monitor their academic growth, conferencing with parents weekly via student agendas, parent teacher meetings and through conference phone calls.
I believe that every child has a different manner of obtaining and learning information and it is the instructor's duty to identify each student's learning style and to teach accordingly. Think of a key ring with all sorts of different keys on the ring. As a teacher you must t ... read more

My philosophy on education is much like my philosophy on people in general. I believe in a very person-first approach to people in whatever situation I meet them, whether it be socially or educationally. Therefore, my philosophy centers around the idea that all students are unique individuals, with unique gifts, skills, talents, and styles of learning. All students, regardless of their age, need to be respected for their individuality in a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere. Such an atmosphere positively fosters the opportunity to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As an educator, I see teaching as an opportunity for continual learning and growth.
