A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science from Grand Valley State University in 2008, and has equipped me with the knowledge of many applications of biological and physical sciences. I worked in a research lab in college and was responsible for training new students. In addition I acted as the supervisor of the laboratory for a group of high school interns, working to advise them on their research projects and educate them on basic laboratory protocols. After graduation, I accepted a job where I acted as a laboratory manager, directly training new staff laboratory techniques. I developed professional writing and presenting skills of data, and have had some of my research professionally published.

The greatest challenge in effectively teaching students is also what makes being an educator most rewarding. That challenge is about making connections with what students already know. My teaching style focuses on having an understanding of the student's pre-existing knowledge, and using that as a base on which to create connections to new knowledge. In this way, new ideas that were once abstract can be made relevant to the student's life, creating a real learning situation. This challenge is also the most rewarding part of being an educator because when students learn by building connections, they get excited about that new information.
