I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. When the comfort level is established we then develop a mutual-learning relationship, as I can learn from the student just as much as he or she can learn from me.
I have tutored throughout school and into college. During college, I mentored and tutored two young girls from an under-privileged school for a local program. After college, I did some private consulting, helping people write admissions essays and prepare for the ACT and other standardized tests. In my undergraduate program I earned a BA in English and spent time working as a writer and Sports Editor for my college newspaper, worked as an intern at a newspaper, and worked in Public Relations as Communications Manager for a nonprofit organization.
I believe that any child can learn and that we all have various learning styles. We just have to find the style that is best for optimum learning. Some of us are visual learners and some are auditory learners, and many of us learn with a combination of styles. I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing.
