After attending the University at Albany for four years I have accumulated a wealth of experience in Chemistry and Physics which has culminated in multiple accolades and two degrees. Previously, while a member of the national honor society in high school I tutored many elementary and high school students in subjects such as math, science, and history.
In my experience, most students under perform in science and math due to the an inability to relate theses subjects to practical real life examples. Connecting chemistry and physics principles with analogous real life examples is the key for students to become both interested and proficient in these subjects. While obtaining my biology degree from LeMoyne college I worked with underpriviledged children in an afterschool program. This program was aimed at keeping these children off the street while their parents were at work along with helping them improve their grades. My duties included helping them with their homework and tutoring them in problem subjects as expressed by their teachers. This was a volunteer job that I found very rewarding. Afterwards, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 13 years, and then started a small company doing outsourced research. After selling that company, I became a Visiting Professor teaching organic chemistry at Union College (a two-year position). I enjoyed teaching and students generally enjoyed me also. I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. When/ if they struggle, I will be there to help set them back on track.
