I spend much of time making the student understand that it is okay to feel behind in a subject and that the student should believe in himself. This belief is built on continued practice on fundamentals that I watch them go through but only ask questions when I see them going astray. Everyone needs to learn the material for his or herself. For math problems, I usually work problems and explain each step, and then have the student attempt to work a similiar one when they feel like they understand the problems. I try to be as helpful as possible while still focusing on the goal of total understanding for the student, as well as the ability to work a similiar problem independently with confidence. For paper writing, I would have the student brainstorm some ideas, and then together we could discuss the pro's and con's of the topic and organization choice, and provide tips on how we could better the assignment.
