Psychology Professor/Reading Specialist

Over 25 years of teaching experience (all grade levels ~ from preschool to university graduate level courses). I enjoy tutoring, as it allows me to work one-on-one with a student to best assess their strengths and weaknesses in order to help them reach their goals. I have worked with children and families for the past twenty years in various settings. I have a BS in social science from Longwood University and a Master's of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. My career and experience entails training others, instructing in a collegiate setting, writing assessments, reports and maintaining vital documentation on client progress.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my years at Liberty University, I was provided with an outstanding education that challenged me to grasp the complexities of the universe. I currently hold a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular biology, and I have minored in Psychology and Chemistry. I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa. If a child knows how to utilize resources such as the textbook, example problems, and the internet, then he or she will be able to work independently through a tough problem.

I will be graduating in May 2011 with a Masters of Arts in Teaching for Special Education and will then obtain a teaching license for Special Education, K-12.
