My comments on tutoring Calculus II : Where Calculus I was a struggle, Calculus II was surprisingly easy to me. I thought it was going to destroy me. The opposite was true. Derivatives and integrals came very easily to me. Differential equations were very tough, yet still manageable. I ended up getting a 4.0 in the class.

I always liked playing up my quirky personality. My favorite teachers and professors were the goofy ones, the ones who can relate to the students' fun side. These teachers also challenged me the most, and I ended up getting so much more out of the course. I figure that, if a student likes the teacher, he or she will pay more attention and have a deeper respect for the teacher. The teacher then can use this trust to push the student a little more, intellectually. I find that is what works best for me.
I don't any paid, professional tutoring experience. However, I have volunteered my services to family members and friends. During my sophomore year, I took Organic Chemistry and excelled. However, my friends were struggling. They hated me a bit for how easy it came to me. I decided to tutor them and help them with homework assignments and studying. They ended up doing very well on the ... read more

I worked in industry with computers the first 20 years of my career in Caracas, Venezuela. I worked the next 27 years in education as faculty at Brigham Young University and upon retirement at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. At both places I was teaching computer programming and design and at Del Mar Web design and implementaion. I found out that with classroom teaching it is very important that every student knows your expectations and what is wanted. Also to provide the corresponding feed back and help necessary, so all students can progress successfully.
My teaching style is one focused on hands on. I set up one class in Del Mar where the students developed a Web site for an outside nonpropfit client for free in one semester. This was well received, provided good experience to students and built good relationship between education and local industry. I loved moving from ... read more

I have worked with adults. I prefer a one on one direct instruction and mentoring, keeping everything simple and fun. I am not sure how well I would be with children; I have none of my own and have not spent much time with my nephews and nieces. I have worked with a few of my friends children, helping them understand algebra, showing them how simple it really is and how it can be fun.
As a engineer I have been training operators in everything form SPC to troubleshooting for 30 years. I am a volunteer tutor for Adult ESL & GED for the Literacy Council of Williamson County since June 2009.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught problem solving to many friends and family. I like to explain the foundations of what they're trying to learn and most importantly explain to them why they're learning it. Once this is done, I bring the whole subject together in the end so that they may see what pieces of the puzzle they were missing. In mathematics for example, one may not understand the algebraic portion of integrals but once I explain the geometrical portion, things start to make sense. In mathematics and physics, there's almost always a geometrical picture that a student can think of faster than remembering steps and formulas. I like to use analogies to bring abstract concepts down to earth.
I graduated from UT Austin with a BS physics and BA mathematics. I still study both subjects independently to be ready for graduate school. I have held a job in both IT and Engineering where I have used my s ... read more

Google me or use Wikipeida; I am well-known in the database world. I have two Masters, written 8 books on Databases and SQL, and over 900 articles in the computer trade press in the US and Europe. I have taught training classes or consulted Africa, Europe, South America and on-line classes. I was on the founding staff of Neumont University in Salt Lake City; a for-profit start-up for software developers. I edited a recreational math column in ABACUS for Springer-Verlag years ago. I like abstract games and I still have a nice little comic book collection. I am an old Fan Boy.
I like to use computers and was a volunteer at the Dr. Math website years ago. I start with axioms and build on them, so that there is an organized system for the student. But thanks to the computers, I am a constructivist; if you cannot construct a model then it is suspect. Thanks to the recreatio ... read more
