A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a minor in criminal justice. While attending college I also took numerous creative/composition writing classes. Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not. I have received degrees in Int'l Business from Lourdes College, as well an Associates Degree in Accounting from Owens Community College. While with the Ohio Air National Guard, participated in the Mentoring program with Township Elementary, Swanton Local Schools for five(5)-years. I enjoyed working with the students, helping those that needed a little extra attention. I enjoy reading, writing, learning new words, learning period. Math, science, grammer, writing, civics, are all areas where our future need some help and I want to help make a difference. This is a serious problem for us as a society and a nation. I was a tutor while in college. I tutored students in History, Accounting, and Greek. I was a double major:Accounting and Christian Ministry. I was a substitute teacher in Indiana from 1990-1994. I taught everything from Kindergarden to High School. I was a couple of teacher's personal sub. I also was involved with the program that dealt with students with developmental disabilites. Currently, I am homeschooling my daughter. She is very gifted, so we are letting her interests lead us. She is the hardest one I have ever taught, but that is because I am so close to her.
My teaching style is based on the student. One teaching style does not fit everyone. I have to see how the student learns and then adapt my teaching style to meet his or her needs. I love helping people, and especially when they get it. That is so rewarding.

I have experience in every level of student. My first degree (A.S.) was in Engineering and I worked at higher level math, including a college Teacher's Assistant in Calculus. I went on to obtain a B.S. in Education. I took the coursework for Middle and High School endorsements in 4 other subject areas. I work in Remedial Education at a local university currently.

I have taught as a TA at Wright State University 2 years in interpersonal and business communications, I taught 1 year at Wright State University Branch Campus interpersonal communications, business communications, communications in the classroom, and mass media. I taught 3 years of English for Ft. Wayne Community Schools to high school students in the Youth Life Skills program. I have had nearly 2,000 hours of anatomy course work as well as I've taken biology, chemistery, and pharmacology at Indiana-Purdue University of Ft Wayne.

I am a very energetic and interactive teacher, moving around the classroom, challenging students with questions, providing many examples and anecdotes to illustrate teaching points. I always try to teach inductively--leading the student to discover the answer on their own, and I encourage them to express their own original thoughts. I use a multisensory approach to teaching, using audio-visual resources and the internet whenever possible.
