This particular position interests me because I struggled with math through middle school and understand the frustration it can create for a student. Mathematics is now my strongest subject and I chose the profession of accounting to utilize those strengths. During my time at college, I helped other students with their studies in math and business, specifically statistics and quantitative analysis. Although this teaching experience was with college level students, I have held a summer job working with 8-12 year olds for the past four years. When I finish my Master’s Degree, I may consider teaching at an institution such as CCAC because I enjoy helping others with their education.

I believe that all children learn differently and at different levels and as a teacher, you need to recongize that and adapt your lessons to your students so they can achieve. For social studies, most student think that class is all about taking notes and reading from the book but I put a twist on all of my lessons. I do a lot of group projects, I have the students do presentations for each other on the material and also reanacts of big events to help the students understand what really happened with that specific event and how it impacted history.
As a recent graduate from Westminster College, I have earned a BA in History and my PA teaching certificate for 7-12 in Social Studies. I believe that every child has the unalienable right to experience some success each and every day of their lives. My approach is hands-on, student centered and nurturing. I believe in learning by discovery and the use of manipulatives in a manner whereby the student learns without even knowing it. The discovery approach is best to grasping knowledge but to process any and all information is tantamount. Knowing what to do with the information is far more important than just possessing it.
