As a graduate from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology I have gained knowledge and expertise in communicating with people, presenting information, and expressing myself in papers, essays and reports. Following the completion of my degree I had the opportunity to become a baseball coach where I fully utilized my communication skills in my attempt to enlighten the players. While I have worked with a range of different students in many different subject areas, I have discovered a great love for the over-all tutoring experience. I began as a volunteer helping first graders learn to read and now I work daily with undergrad and graduate level college students, helping them with research papers, critical essays and thesis work. I take a special interest in helping my students get excited about their assignments and gain as much self confidence as possible in regards to their own capabilities and strengths. Teaching needs to adjust with each student or class, because everyone has their own flavor for learning. I tend to let the student take the lead at first, and then I try to guide them through the areas they're questioning. It's like a car on a road with a new driver: the student is driving all over the road, and I need to gently urge them into the right lane (or the correct answer). I also like to use real world examples when I can from my past experience, and encourage the student to do so as well. When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English.
