A Little Bit About Me...

I earned two bachelors' degrees from Norwich University in 2011. I graduated with a BS in Sports Medicine Athletic Training and a BS in Sports Medicine Health Sciences with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Education Health. I excelled and enjoyed the information that was taught to me, particularly in the fields of chemistry and math. Although I have no formal tutoring or teaching experience in the typical classroom setting, I have done plenty of informal teaching. I helped classmates who were struggling in subjects that I understood such as Organic Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Calculus, Kinesiology, etc. I have also taught people of all ages in more physical activities such as skiing and gymnastics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a knack for creating analogies and mechanisms to help students remember things for exams, as well as strategies and ways of thinking that may be a little different than what was taught in class (but still gets them to the final result). I really want to help kids succeed in school and be in charge of their learning even after I am no longer their tutor. I like to inspire them to learn.
As an undergraduate at MIT, I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, and have complete master of those taught at the high school level. I have also completed several advanced courses in chemistry, biology, and physics, but am still young enough to remember the techniques I used to learn those subjects when I myself was a high school student. I have prepared many students (privately) for final exams in biology, geometry, and algebra.

One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline. I believe that I am a very patient person, as well as someone who is easy to get along with. I would describe my teaching style as calm and focused on fundamentals. Watching the look on students face as they grasp a concept they are struggling with is what makes teaching and tutoring worthwhile for me. I love the "aha" moment. I have a laid back, but respectful style of tutoring and teaching where I encourage students to think about concepts and how they understand those concepts. While teaching as an intern last semester, I designed lessons where students investigated concepts in small groups and were able to work out their own understandings together.
