I began studying french in the 9th grade, became President of my high school's French Club my senior year, and then attended the University of PIttsburgh at Johnstown Majoring in Creative Writing while working on my French certification. I have 40 credits and a 3.0 but am no longer able to afford classes there. I like to cover the basics right off the bat, even if they may be familiar with them and then focus on whichever areas are most troubling for the student.

Through the years I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of students with special needs and different abilities. I seek to find the individual's learning style and devise a plan that will fit that student. The curriculum and teaching style should fit the student, not the other way around. I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, and then work individually with the students. I like to encourage them to help one another if they feel confident in the subject. I pay great attention to verifying that each student is following the lesson. My main teaching style is "I do, you do," meaning I show them how to do a problem, or spell a word, and then they show me how. I teach students in an informal manner. My individual students call me Phyllis. I welcome questions, and if I do not have an immediate answer, we will look up the answer together. I am a positive, patient teacher. I use creativity to help students learn. Often I will introduce an idea, and then have students explore how to use the idea. Then the student and I evaluate the result together. If I give a student practice examples to reinforce the ideas we have covered, then I am prompt in returning those materials, and will not move on until the student is satisfied with his own proficiency.
