Elementary Social Studies is one of my top subjects! I have taught elementary grades for over 15 years.

My teaching style is to engage the student as much as possible and to utilize as many senses as possible. I will often use a "game" to practice a skill. When teaching a skill, my emphasis is understanding "why" something is done a particular way rather than stressing straight memorization.
I have taught "students" from age 3 to age 73. Most of my experience has been in elementary classroom situations, but I have tutored individual students, taught computer skills to business classes and senior citizens, as well as business technology classes in a community college. I am also a co-founder of a small non-graded school which has now existed for over 40 years and is recognized as an established school by the state of Ohio. I enjoy teaching adults as well as high school students. I do not have much training teaching below junior high; however, I am confident that I could successfully teach math or language. Although, I don't mind the traditional classroom setting, I am quite used to instructing on a one-to-one basis. Our GED programs are completely individualized for learners to move at their own pace, and I encourage this type of teaching style when manageable. Many of the students/adults that I have worked with have a learning disability of some sort, but I feel that I learn from each student just as much as they are learning from me. The first thing that I like to do as a teacher is tell my students why I chose my profession. I think a little insight as to who I am, lets my students know how passionate I am about my job. All students do not learn in the same ways, nor do they learn at the same paces. It is my job to build upon my students' strengths, and make them believe that they can succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in learning to do things the "hard" way for math, making change, etc. Calculators are good for higher functions and after basics are learned. I try showing different ways of looking at something so the child will understand one way or another. I stress creativity and working things out for yourself as that is needed in life.
