I help writers to feel confident and able to make progress

I'm a writing tutor with more than two years of experience tutoring college-level writing of all sorts, mainly papers but also essays and applications. I've also attended various training workshops about academic writing and helping English-language learners. My tutoring skill-set is robust. In addition to my skills and experience, I also bring kindness and patience to the tutoring table. Writing is a process, so we must try and try again in order to proceed. My tutoring style is geared towards establishing and maintaining a growth-oriented mindset. I aim to help you become more confident and independent in your own ability to write and to learn to write. In college, I worked as a writing tutor and as the head tutor of the writing center on campus. I've tutored for many hours on a variety of writing subjects. Lauren -- Tutor Extroadinaire

I've taken courses in tutoring, grammar, Shakespeare, and writing composition, as well as worked in the University Writing Center at my university as a writing consultant. I currently tutor three Middle Eastern students in writing composition, conventions of English grammar, and health. I do freelance proofreading and editing.
Because English and literature is subjective, I use a nondirective approach to ensure that the student is exercising their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Basically, I ask them about their interpretation of the text or their own writing. With grammar, I typically model the correct use for the student two or three times, and then have them finish finding patterns and correcting mistakes themselves.

My teaching style is fun: relaxed and engaging for my students and for me too. I am serious about giving my clients the best and richest learning situation as possible. I use a modality designed just for that student and perhaps not offered at school. Since I am in a one on one setting I can ideally focus on just that one student's personal needs. I communicate clearly with all stake holders to ensure I am meeting the learner's needs and expectations. I know some of our relationships will be short term to get past an academic challenge and others may be longer to meet your needs. Whatever the length or circumstances I want it to be the best, positively memorable and educationally worthwhile experience for my student.

As an English major I have always enjoyed and excelled in the field. I was top of my class in high school. I also aided in the kindergarten class. I changed my major in college because I knew English was my calling. I have a Bachelor's degree from Warner Pacific. I enjoyed my classes and did extremely well. I aided at Clackamas High for a while, where I enjoyed the one on one with the students. In my current job I have trained and taught many associates. My teaching style is to help make student's successful by understanding their learning style. I have had the good fortune of working with myriad learning styles in a special needs environment, (in the home and classroom) which runs from autistic spectrum disorder to talented and gifted. Working with this huge array of kids has really opened my eyes to a variety of learning tools to ensure success. I am also very enthusiastic and children always find me to be relatable, despite where they are coming from in their academic process.
I began working in the school setting in February, 2002. Initially I worked as a teacher's aide in the special education (K-5) classroom environment. Shortly after, I began to tutor after-school hours for one of the special needs students. The "parent network" took off and soon I was tutoring five students per week. In 2004, I returned to school for ... read more

After several years working as an administrator in the health care field, I decided to make a drastic career change and begin post-graduate study in English Literature, something I had always wanted to do. Having already completed 41 of the needed 45 credits toward my degree, I expect to receive my M.A. in English Literature from Portland State University no later than the Spring of 2011. I currently hold a 3.96 GPA with focus areas in Victorian and 19th Century American Literature, as well as Rhetoric and Composition. Throughout my graduate study I have volunteered many hours as a writing tutor for a local community college, assisting students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, including non-native speakers.

I have an extensive experience in the field of tutoring. For the past eight years, I have work with students from age kindergarten to highschool. From one-on-one tutoring, small groups, to helping a class of more than 60 students. Therefore, I can recognize each student's ability and devised a studying plan to help them improve their weaknesses. With a Bachelor degree in Biology and Chemistry, I have a strong background in science and mathematics. Furthermore, I have taken many courses in Writing, English, and grammar.

I greatly enjoy helping students come to the “Aha” moments of understanding. Almost nothing gives me greater joy than seeing a student’s eyes light up as he or she makes connections between new and old information. I am very empathetic when a student feels blocked in his or her progress and work hard to find the element that will unblock the learning process. I am easy going and have a good sense of humor, while at the same time I am able to see educational objectives and focus on getting there. I think that every student can learn if they are given the right encouragement and skills. I do my best to do that for my students.

I am best-suited for the older student. I like to establish a rapport for efficient use of teaching/tutoring time. The more comfortable a student is with his teacher/tutor, the more interested he becomes in the subject being taught/tutored. Some students need extra help, which I am patient enough to provide; however, some students need a little push, which I am firm enough to provide.
In college, I pursued a minor degree in English because of my love of English, reading, and writing. I love to proofread and edit. Being a sociology major, I had to write many papers, which fine-tuned my grammatical, spelling, proofreading, and editing skills. In law school, I excelled in and enjoyed legal writing courses. While I worked for Kaplan, I taught and privately tutored ACT students. As an attorney I have extensively utilized all of the above-mentioned skills. I enjoyed teaching and t ... read more
