A Little Bit About Me...

While working on my Bachelor's Degree at A&M I tutored students in various fields such as Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Bacterial Physiology and Genetics, Ancient Greek, and Clarinet. I also have teaching experience from my time as an assistant instructor at a martial arts school where I aided and held classes in Youth and Adult Brazilian JiuJitsu, Karate and Krav Maga.
I find that talking and reasoning through a problem or situation is the best way to commit information to long term memory. I do this by drawing pictures/maps/diagrams, posing related questions, and drawing on current knowledge to create more connections to what is being studied.

Very Capable Algebra Tutor

I am a senior at Vista Ridge High School this year. I have taken and aced all the math classes my school has to offer and I feel very comfortable teaching the lower level math to kids. I have experience tutoring kids at my high school. Teaching comes natural to me. I use algebra, geometry and calculus on a daily basis. I am going to be majoring in math next year at the University of A&M.
I teach by simplifying the math. I break down the principles into easy to understand concepts. These concepts are then translated to the real math and understood much better.

French, Math, and Arabic Tutor

The first thing I’d like to first teach my students about Math, Arabic, and French is that they are relevant and fun, so they are in turn interested in learning them, which will make the subject easy to teach, and allow for pleasant engagement of the students and myself. Math and languages require the students to be active participants. I have come to learn that those who attend lectures passively tend to fall behind. While the material can be sometimes overwhelming, one approach I have employed and has led to successful results is setting clear and short-term goals that are achievable but also challenging. With a Masters degree in psychology, I have acquired the skill to better understand nonverbal communication, facial expressions and behaviors, to recognize confusion or uncertainty and address it before proceeding to the next chapter or assignment. Respecting students is a very high p ... read more

My comments on tutoring Algebra II : Algebra made up a good portion of all of my coursework. It permeates all facets of science, so you have to master algebra and calculus simultaneously as you progress through scientific studies. I always have been particularly skilled in the math department. There is something about numbers and equations that just makes sense to me.

I always liked playing up my quirky personality. My favorite teachers and professors were the goofy ones, the ones who can relate to the students' fun side. These teachers also challenged me the most, and I ended up getting so much more out of the course. I figure that, if a student likes the teacher, he or she will pay more attention and have a deeper respect for the teacher. The teacher then can use this trust to push the student a little more, intellectually. I find that is what works best for me.
I don't any paid, professional tutoring experience. However, I have volunteered my services to family members and friends. During my sophomore year, I took Organic Chemistry and excelled. However, my friends were struggling. They hated me a bit for how easy it came to me. I decided to tutor them and help them with homework assignments and studying. They ended up doing very well on the ... read more

I have attained a MS in Counseling and Psychology, and a BS in Psychology with a Math minor. Through my journey into higher education I have been fortunate enough to motivate myself and others to push through tough courses by establishing study groups. I have participated in these groups and have learned that additional study time spent with someone more familiar with a subject is the difference between passing a course the first time and dropping the course to repeat it later. Patience is very important when tutoring and I have demonstrated a calm attitude when tutoring students in algebra and statistics over the last four years. I am capable to help with various math subjects and writing especially in A.P.A. format.
I believe there is more than one way to accomplish a goal so I am not limited to only one certain teaching style. I will adapt to my client. A client may learn best w ... read more

More About This Tutor...

While in college (1988-1994), I worked as a grader in the math department, with a goal of providing useful feedback to the students. I also began working as a tutor at Austin Community College (ACC) in their free learning labs at this time. I have worked at ACC for about 10 years, tutoring math classes from basic math through calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, discrete math and probability. I also tutor physics, chemistry, statistics and writing. I have done some classroom teaching of the lower level math classes, but, as I do not have a master's degree, I cannot, by law, formally teach the upper level classes, though I would like to, and though I have been used as a substitute teacher on occasion for these classes.
My goal when working with students is to fully describe the steps necessary to solving various classes of problems, often in an outline form, for ... read more
