I am a true constructivist. I believe that students need to construct their own understanding if they are to achieve mastery. When it comes to math, many kids can repeat the motions and get the right answer, but may not really understand what they are doing or why. I actually love the question, "When am I ever going to use this?" I am patient and willing to spend as much time as needed till the information is understood. I make effective use of diagrams and charts to help visualize what students are actually calculating. I love opening students' eyes to the wonders of science. It is my experience that a student can learn anything, even the most complicated scientific theories, if the teacher is patient and engaging. In teaching, I find the key to unlocking the minds of the students is to find the appropriate analogy or metaphor. If a teacher can aptly relate a concept the student doesn’t understand to one that the student does understand, not only will the student learn the new concept, they will be far less likely to forget it in the future.
