A graduate of the University of Montana School of Journalism, I earned a Double Degree in Journalism and English. I originally received my Montana Secondary Teaching Certificate through UM. I am extremely well-rounded. I've taught all levels of high school English, including American Studies Honors (team teaching with a history teacher), freshman Lit & Comp., Creative Writing, sophomore English, college-bound Senior English. I love to work with high school and middle school kids. My teaching style is firm in the sense that I will not do work for the student. I am casual in the sense that I prefer a one-on-one atmosphere to learning and a conversational approach to synthesizing ideas. I am concerned for students beyond their grades and truly hope to help kids succeed. I have worked for the last six years on a volunteer, part-time, and full-time basis with a non-profit youth organization called Young Life. During that time I have been intermittently substitute teaching and tutoring with public and private high school and middle school students. I believe that the individual child dictates my teaching style. I learned that no two children learn the same way. I usually start by asking the child questions that prompt them to figure out the answer themselves. I feel that children remember most information that the figure out on their own rather than something dictated to them. I also feel that generating proficient study skills is important. As branch manager I was responsible for training all new staff. I have trained everyone from retail bankers through branch managers. Some of my trainees even moved on to regional management in other states. I have also tutored college students in math and english. From 2003-2005, I homeschooled my mother-in-law's three special needs children with the pace system. I currently homeschool my two children as well.
