I recalled my difficulties in learning difficult subjects, my difficulties are not universal but I draw from them in finding what is blocking the student from grasping certain concepts. I recall teaching my children at a very early age the concept of ratios. I used windows, tiles from the kitchen, a pizza pie etc. This, before going to pencil and paper and it worked. Ever since graduating from college and moving to Chicago I make time during my week to volunteer at the Chicago Temple in the Loop to help a child develop reading and comprehension skills in the English language. I invent creative ways and use the scientific method to engage my tutee with learning, such as on one occasion, while reading a literary work by Cuban poet Jose Marti, both the student and I individually drew pictures and diagrams as a way of interpreting the poem, and later shared our ideas with each other.
