A Little Bit About Me...

I was raised in a family of teachers. Both my parents have been teachers, and my older brother and sister are both currently teachers. As an psychiatric technician at Napa State Hospital, I was chosen to become a trainer, teaching a new computer system being implemented to nursing and other staff throughout the hospital. I developed classes and created lesson plans for those classes, as well as providing individual training. I held this position for 2 years.
I believe a large part of teaching is to find ways of motivating students to learn. I like to show my students how what they are learning applies to their everyday lives. I encourage active participation by the student. In order to continually improve my own teaching skills, feedback on my own performance is highly valued. Math is a favorite subject of mine, and I would like to have the opportunity to tutor this subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am patient yet firm. My personal background in mathematics was fairly rigorous, so I always make my students show their work. As the subject material gets tougher, it becomes more critical to be able to check all stages of one's work. One of my math teachers gave me some sage advice: "Math teachers are lazy. We find the quickest and shortest route to a solution." I've taken this tongue-in-cheek wisdom to heart in my own way. While there is only one single solution for any math problem, there are infinitely elegant ways to arrive at that solution. I show my students different ways to solve problems because flexibility is key. Mathematics is a great way to keep one's thinking nimble and that can help throughout one's education.
I earned a degree in Applied Mathematics and have always been "the go to guy" when my friends high school aged kids need help with their math homework. I h ... read more

Teaching children of all ages is fun and a good learning experience. Because each child is unique, and with that uniqueness, I treat them as an individual. I believe as an adult, we have to teach the children the right way in life so they can grow up knowing what is right from wrong. I believe, I can give them the tool that will enable them to grow and be a respectable person. I believe, I can make a different in their lives.

I have been a substitute teacher for about 10 years specializing in math & physics. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 20+ years of maintenance/engineering experience. I incorporate practical examples in teaching to give students in depth knowledge in a practical sense. I gather my examples from my varied career experiences from the Military, Aircraft, Engineering, Manufacturing/Maintenance & Computer fields. I sporadically tutors students in my specialty.
I use the Active Participation strategy because it engages the learner not only in understanding but in contributing as well. This active learning process combined with introduction of practical uses/examples of the the subject matter provides a deeper meaning. But most of all the Objective,Purpose, and what their interests are, must be known so that these can be incorporated in the learning process.

I have been an engineer for many years and use math and computers on a daily basis. I enjoy solving math problems and am particularly good at it. I tutored elementary math in high school and taught a 16 week shop math class to Mechaincs where I worked as an engineer twice for free. I frequently help people with math and computer programs. I have a great interest in computers and am very good at Microsoft Word and Excel and AutoCAD. I have been using these programs for twenty plus years and spend a lot of time learning shortcuts and developing new ways of using commands that I already know. I love showing others how to improve their productivity and am the "go to" person at work for help and tutoring.
I have a very basic approach to math and can usually get people to understand much better than the typical classroom style of teaching. I am patient and try to help people ... read more

Even before I went to college and earned my B.A., I had already taught two years of ESL in Kachin State, Burma. I came back to the US and earned my degree in East Asian Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. A few months after I graduated I went to the People's Republic of China and taught English as a Second Language from 2003 through 2006. In addition, I have completed all coursework for my M.A. in General Education, however, I have not finished the degree which requires student teaching. I am currently employed as a substitute teacher for two local school districts.
My teaching style depends on the needs of the particular students. I assess the style needed for a particular lesson and use visuals, such as PowerPoint presentations, textbooks, as well as audio, with such tools as are available after individual assessments. As a lifelong learner, I'm always motivated by students who have a curiosity for improving their own skills. I have a BA in liberal arts from Vassar College and a MS in Education from Queens College, which I earned through the full-time work/part-time study New York City Teaching Fellowship. I am fluent in Spanish, conversant in Japanese and French, and am always excited about learning more languages. As a special education teacher, I've worked with large classrooms, team taught with colleagues, and overseen the development of children with more severe disabilities in reading, writing, and math.
I believe that education should be tailored to the needs, abilities, and learning styles of each student. I believe in consistent positive reinforcement and praise, and in tracking and measuring skills so that students have evidence of their progress. I hope to help students discover the in ... read more

I enjoy teaching children from third grade and up. I am very patient, and easy-going. My goal is get students to see real world applications for each subject I tutor. I teach in an auditory-visual way, to provide the basics necessary for students to reach their potential. I relate to children on their level, and help them to see new ways to look at their work. I always work to make a difference in all of my student's lives.
I became interested in teaching after graduating with my bachelor degree in Broadcast Comm. Arts. I worked in the music industry as a manager where I trained new employees to use the computer software at our company. I also taught a course in music business distribution at SFSU in 2002. I helped to organize our systems and create job descriptions for our company. During the last four years I have tutored students in English, math and science.

I am a fan of teaching people who are eager and willing to learn. If a person actually wants to learn, then the trick is merely to be patient, build up a persons confidence, and try as many angles as possible until you find the right one that clicks with how they best learn and are able to understand. Fundamental to the learning process however is in having a student actually do for themselves, rather than merely watch someone else, and work through the steps in a supportive environment. I also believe that people learn more from their mistakes than from their successes.
I have spent most of my formative and adult years learning, and then helping others to learn from the knowledge I have gained. My first job at age 15 was working in a computer assistance program which helped children and adults with severe disabilities become proficient with computer technology. Later I was promo ... read more

As a teacher and tutor for over 27 years, I have had the pleasure of helping students explore their potential, find their passion, and excel in their learning experiences. A Little Bit About Me...

I started my teaching experience as a hired math tutor for the University of Maryland while I was getting my BS in Civil Engineering. While pursuing my MS and PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley I was a teaching assistant for 4 years. I taught both undergraduate and graduate level classes with responsibilities including: writing and drafting a course reader from professor’s lectures; designing, organizing, writing, and compiling assignments and projects; teaching weekly lab and discussion sessions during which students worked in teams to complete long term projects; mentoring students during weekly office hours; proctoring and grading exams and projects. I am comfortable teaching all levels of mathematics.
Wanting to teach is the major reason I got my PhD. I've always had a love of learning, and want to be able to share that with students. It is i ... read more
