The most effective methods for teaching math to any students level is to make it relevant, connect math content to every days' life. We use math everyday and yet most of our youngster don't even realize that, especially when it comes to higher math level like calculus or even algebra. I learned to play chess at 7. I studied the annotated chess games of the Grandmasters. I played a Radio Shack chess computer for several years until I was pretty good. I started a chess club at Trinity High. Then after high school, I played about 8,000 hours with other people and software. Then I went to my first United States Chess Federation tournament in Dallas, Texas in 2005. I got first place in the Open section. I earned $75 for playing 5 games. I played in a few more tournaments, and turned my attention to other more profitable pursuits. I continued to develop my skills online and against chess engines.
